Most notable is the Montréal Metro and bus rapid transit system acting as the agency’s backbone. Most buses terminate at Metro stations, regional terminals, or loops.

Opus is the automated fare collection system for the Greater Montréal and Québec City.

Credit cards and mobile wallets are also accepted.

Fares

The STM uses a zoned based fare system. Most tourists and travellers will be within Zone A which covers all of the Island of Montréal. Ride and transfer for up to 120 minutes (2 hours).

A single ride fare is $3.75.

The TTC covers the entirety of the Island of Montréal. With some buses and Metro service extending to major hubs beyond the island.

Of note, the STM’s 747 YUL Airport bus offer dedicated luggage racks when travelling to Montréal Trudeau (YUL).

Pros


  1. Very Extensive coverage across Montréal.
  2. Large métro network for Canadian standards.
  3. Extensive bus network.
  4. Good integration with regional ARTM and nearby transit services.
  5. Large network makes it possible to travel and explore Montréal without a car.

Cons


  1. Crowding, especially on Orange and Green Lines during peak rush hour.
  2. Limited, dedicated bus routes.
  3. Bus reliability means travel can be unpredictable.
  4. Construction projects are causing major route diversions and delays.
  5. A streetcar/tram network would make Montréal’s neighbourhoods more whimsical to explore.
