Union Pearson Express (better known as UP Express) is the airport rail link connecting Toronto Pearson International Airport to Union Station in downtown Toronto. Offered as a ‘premium” service with dedicated luggage racks and more comfortable seating. Established in 2015, UP Express primarily serves travellers connecting between the airport and central station. Secondarily, it operates as a hybrid between commuter and rapid transit (S-Bahn) service for residents living along the line. The train departs every 15 minutes and travels between the hubs in 28 minutes. Contrary to the “Express” name, the train stops at three additional stations en route.
Tickets
Pay for tickets in advance at UP Express, online or at the stations (in person and ticket machines).
Presto is the automated fare collection system for Toronto, the Greater Toronto Area and select major cities in Ontario.
Credit cards and mobile wallets are also accepted. Save 15% when purchasing a ride with Presto, credit or debit card, or mobile wallet.
For intercity travellers, UP Express tickets can be purchased alongside your VIA Rail fare.

Pros
- Fast, frequent service
- departing every 15 minutes for a 28 minute ride.
- Avoid Toronto’s nutritiously congested traffic to the airport.
- A variety of fare options to accommodate layovers, groups, and greeters.
- A faster, more spacious alternative to TTC’s Route 900 Airport Express.
- Weston Station offers travellers west of Toronto and the airport to transfer without having to change downtown at Union Station.
- Intercity travellers can book tickets alongside VIA Rail for an all-in-one purchase.
- Fully accessible, step free travel between the airport and downtown.
Cons
- Not a true “express” service with multiple stops en route.
- Initially introduced as a premium service (with a specialized “in-flight” magazine introducing visitors to Toronto) was discontinued due to complaints about high costs.
- Train interior is starting to show signs of age, not the best introduction to Toronto.
- Mechanical problems has resulted in slower bus replacement service.
Notes
- UP Express is a fast, convenient way to travel from YYZ to downtown Toronto with luggage. Thus providing a stratifying way to bookend your travels.
