Located on the expansive prairies, Melville is a major grain transfer point. The original station building is now owned by the municipality with the VIA Rail station building being a smaller shelter located east on the platform. This station on the serves as a crew change and refueling stop. Nearby is the Canadian National Railways freight yard.
