Calgary International Airport is Canada’s 5th busiest aviation hub severing Edmonton and acting as a gateway hub to Northern Alberta and Northern Canada. YEG is the major gateway for those in the energy industry, visiting the Rocky Mountains and Jasper National Park.
Located 30km and south of downtown Edmonton, several options allow travellers to reach the city centre. There is no direct air rail line to downtown Edmonton.

Terminal
- Forms a rough “hockey stick” shape with the Central Hall acting as the focal point at the corner to help orient travellers.
- U.S. preclearance flights are located at the southern tip of the terminal.
- International flights are mixed with domestic flights but most operate out of the south end of the terminal with gates designed to accommodate larger aircraft.
Notes
- The windswept control tower located at the Central Hall is an architectural treat. Makes sure to catch a glance when out of the airplane window.
Pros
- Strong domestic connectivity
- Easy-to-navigate terminal
- Important gateway hub for Northern Alberta and Northern Canada.
Cons
- No direct air rail link to downtown Edmonton and limited public transit options (although the 747 bus goes to Century Park Station).
- YEG’s location south of Edmonton in Leduc isn’t very convenient for travellers without a car.
- Travelling from YEG to Jasper can be tricky and not direct.
Notes
- While Edmonton International Airport does not have as many destinations it’s busier southern neighbour Calgary Airport (YYC), it makes up for it with a strong domestic network and connections to the north.
